The sun rises in the east and sets in the west and travels along a southerly path, so the sun reaches its furthest northerly location during the warmest months, when outdoor spaces are in high use. Shade trees can be an invaluable resource to keeping an outdoor space as comfortable and as appealing as possible. Shade trees should be located so that they fully optimize their shade potential. for example, shade trees on the northwest corner of the residence, should be orientated so that it gives shade in a particular area (ie. a patio) at the time of day when shade is needed most, mid-afternoon.
This is done by determining the area of the lawn where the full size tree will project the great and longest shade pattern. A simple test can be preformed by standing in the rough area in which you think the tree should be placed at a time between 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. and determining the exact spot in the lawn that where the shadow's
projection will be in the center of the outdoor space needing shade.
